Kali Linux - Installing Snap
Kali Linux, the beloved operating system of security enthusiasts and penetration testers, is renowned for its powerful tools and robust features. However, one capability it lacked until recently was the ability to install Snap packages directly from a live environment. But fear not, as we bring you the exciting news that Snap can now be seamlessly installed on Kali Linux, elevating your Linux experience to new heights. In this article, we will walk you through the steps to harness the potential of Snap on your Kali Linux installation.
Before we delve into the installation process, it's important to note that these instructions are specifically tailored for those who have Kali Linux installed on their systems. If you are using a live Kali Linux environment, unfortunately, Snap installation is not currently supported.
Installation Steps:
Step 1: Updating the System
The first step is to ensure your system is up to date. Open the terminal and execute the following commands:
sudo apt update
Step 2: Installing Snap
Now that your system is updated, it's time to install Snap! Execute the following command in the terminal:
sudo apt install snapd
If you encounter any issues with the sudo command not being installed, typically due to providing a root password during the installation, fret not! You can still install Snap by switching to the root account. Follow the commands below:
su root # apt update # apt install snapd
Step 3: Enabling and Starting Snap Services
To ensure smooth sailing with Snap, we need to enable and start two essential services: snapd and snapd.apparmor. Execute the following command in the terminal:
systemctl enable --now snapd apparmor
Step 4: Updating Snap Paths
It's essential to update Snap's paths correctly for your system. To do so, log out and back in again, or simply restart your system.
Step 5: Testing Snap Installation
Now, let's verify that Snap is functioning correctly on your Kali Linux installation. Install the "hello-world" snap by executing the command below:
snap install hello-world
Upon successful installation, you should see a message confirming that the "hello-world" snap is installed. Execute the following command to run it:
$ hello-world
Step 6: Expanding Your Snap Experience
With Snap now running seamlessly on your Kali Linux installation, it's time to explore the vast world of Snap packages. If you're using a desktop environment, we highly recommend installing the Snap Store app, which serves as a hub for discovering and installing a plethora of Snap packages. Unleash your creativity and productivity by accessing an extensive array of software, all within a few clicks.
